  • Wolfgang Baumeister receives the Shaw Prize at ceremony in HK
    The Shaw Prize Award Presentation Ceremony 2025 was recently held at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre. In late May, Wolfgang Baumeister was awarded the Shaw Prize in Life Science and Medicine 2025 for his pioneering development and application of cryo-electron tomography.

  • ​ShanghaiTech’s summer lab program inspires global exchanges
    ShanghaiTech held its 2025Summer Lab for International Studentsfrom June 25 to August 20. Six outstanding undergraduates from the University of Oxford(Oxford), the University of Pennsylvania(UPenn), and the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology (MIPT) completed an eight-week, in-depth research internship and received their certificates.

  • ShanghaiTech team unveils the mystery of sweet taste
    On June 24, a research team led by Assistant Professor Hua Tian and Professor Liu Zhi-Jie from the iHuman Institute and the School of Life Science and Technology at ShanghaiTech University published a study in Nature via Accelerated Article Preview (AAP). Titled “Structural and functional characterization of human sweet taste receptor,” the study reports the cryo-EM structures of the human sweet taste receptor in both ligand-free (apo) and sucralose-bound states.

  • Can a broken ear be fixed? Scientists help deaf mice hear again
    Imagine a world where a child born deaf can hear their parents’ voices for the first time. This vision is closer to reality thanks to a groundbreaking discovery by researchers at iHuman Institute, ShanghaiTech University. Led byAssociate Professor Zhong Guisheng, the team has developed a technology called ARBITER, which has successfully restored hearing in deaf mice by precisely targeting outer hair cells in the ear.

  • New study uncovers molecular mechanisms of bitter taste perception
    Recently, a team led by Professor Liu Zhi-Jie, Director of the iHuman Institute, and Assistant Professor Hua Tian at the School of Life Science and Technology (SLST), in collaboration with the teams from Shandong University, and Shanghai Ninth People’s Hospital affiliated to Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine, unveiled the complex interactions between bitter taste receptors and intracellular tastants, including cholesterol.
