September 14, 2016 - As invited by Prof. Raymond Stevens, Founding Director, and Prof. Zhi-Jie Liu, Deputy Director of iHuman Institute, ShanghaiTech University, Prof. Hartmut Michel, Director of Max Planck Institute of Biophysics, Nobel Laureate in Chemistry in 1988 visited ShanghaiTech University on September 14, 2016 and delivered ShanghaiTech Lecture.  Dr. Jiang Ge, Associate Provost of ShanghaiTech awarded Prof. Michel the Certificate of ShanghaiTech Lecture.

In the lecture, Prof. Michel presented a comprehensive analysis of the mechanism and energy conversion in the key steps in plant photosynthesis.  After a detailed assessment of energy input in biofuel production, he pointed out the limitation of relying on biofuels to meet global energy needs, and discussed alternative options in future energy supply.

In addition to the lecture, Prof. Michel also visited PI labs in iHuman Institute, SIAIS and SLST of ShanghaiTech University and met graduate students.

Hartmut Michel is a distinguished professor of Biochemistry and director of the Molecular Membrane Biology department at the Max Planck Institute for Biophysics, Germany.  His research is on structure, function and mechanism of action of membrane proteins.  He received the Nobel Prize in chemistry jointly with Johann Deisenhofer and Robert Huber in 1988.
