On March 16th, iHuman Institute successfully hosts the first “iHuman-SIAIS-SPST Joint Symposium” at the auditorium of Y building.

This symposium aims at promoting the communications and collaborations among different schools, disciplines and research areas and attracts about 100 people to attend.

Professor Houchao Tao, from iHuman Institute, hosted this joint symposium. Yin Jie, the provost and vice president of ShanghaiTech University delivered the opening remarks, and introduced the distinguishing feature of ShanghaiTech University as “no department under the large schools”, aiming to facilitate the interdisciplinary discussion. Professor Liu Zhi, associate dean of the School of Physical Science and Technology, Professor Zhi-Jie Liu, the executive director of iHuman Institute and Professor Jiang Ge, the executive director of the Shanghai Institute for Advanced Immunochemical Studies, gave concrete introductions of their schools respectively.

A total of 16 professors presented their research works covering the fields of materials science, chemistry, mass spectrometry, computation, imaging, editing, structural biology and chemical biology, etc. Professor Zhong Chao from the School of Physical Science and Technology developed a living functional materials platform based on engineered bacterial biofilms, combining materials science with synthetic biology. Professor Liu Jia, from the Shanghai institute for Immunochemical Studies, developed the CRISPR/Cas9 Surfaceome screen system for dissection of the interactions between macromolecules and host surface proteins, as well as the zinc finger protein-based drug delivery technologies. Professor Zhao Suwen   from iHuman Institute, gave a talk on computational biology study of adtivation mechanisms of GPCRs. This symposium was closed with a fruitful discussion led by Professor Liu Zhi. Attendees suggested valuable steps to optimizing the symposium impact and decided that the next symposium will be hosted by the School of Physical Science and Technology.

This symposium aroused discussion among attendees in different research fields and paved the way for potential collaborations. It is believed that this symposium substantially promoted effective communications among different schools. We hope the joint symposium would become one of the feature activities of ShanghaiTech University.
