Professor Appointment Ceremony of ShanghaiTech-iHuman Institute for Nobel Laureate Kurt Wüthrich

On March 26th, Professor Appointment Ceremony of ShanghaiTech-iHuman Institute was held at Shanghai Pudong Science and Technology Park of Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS). Dr. Mianheng Jiang, President of CAS Shanghai Branch, presented Dr. Kurt Wüthrich, a winner of 2002 Nobel Prize in Chemistry, an Appointment Letter of iHuman Professor.

Leaders of Shanghai Municipal government, heads of CAS Shanghai Branch as well as principals of ShanghaiTech were present at the ceremony, including Mr. Qianghua Shi, Deputy Inspector of Science and Technology Commission of Shanghai Municipality, Mr. Guoqing Fu, Director of the Basic Research Division of Science and Technology Commission of Shanghai Municipality, Mr. Jinlong Shu, Director of the High Education Division of Shanghai Municipal Education Commission, Prof. Zhiyuan Zhu, Executive Vice President of CAS Shanghai Branch, Prof. Jiarui Wu, Vice President of Shanghai Advanced Research Institute (SARI), etc. Prof. Jie Yin, Deputy Director of Shanghai Municipal Education Commission presided at the ceremony. Prof. Raymond C. Stevens, Director of iHuman institute introduced the distinguished achievements made by Prof. Kurt Wüthrich in scientific research.

Prof. Mianheng Jiang awarded Dr. Wüthrich the Appointment Letter of iHuman Professor and extended a warm welcome to Prof. Wüthrich’s participation. He pointed out in his speech that the success of ShanghaiTech University required the support and participation of distinguished scientists both at home and abroad, and Prof. Wüthrich could help the rapid development of ShanghaiTech. Prof. Wüthrich expressed his deep gratitude and indicated that he would help an international team to build up iHuman into an internationally-recognized cell signal transduction institute.

Afterwards, Prof. Wüthrich delivered an academic lecture titled “Membrane Proteins and NMR Spectroscopy in Solution: Structural Biology in Non-crystalline Milieus”. More than 80 experts and postgraduates from CAS and ShanghaiTech University attended the lecture.

On March 25th and March 26th, Prof. Wüthrich visited Shanghai Synchrotron Radiation Facility (SSRF)and National Center for Protein Science Shanghai(NCPSS).

Since 2001 Dr. Kurt Wüthrich has worked as the professor of Biophysics at the ETH Zürich, and Cecil H. and Ida M. Green Professor of Structural Biology at the Scripps Research Institute (TSRI) in La Jolla, CA, USA. His major research interests are structure and function of proteins and nucleic acids. His specialty is nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy with biological macromolecules. He was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 2002 for “his development of nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy for determining the three-dimensional structure of biological macromolecules in solution”. And Prof Wüthrich is also a Foreign Associate, US National Academy of Sciences (1992), Associé étranger, Académie des Sciences, Institut de France (2000), Foreign Member, Latvian Academy of Sciences (2004) and Foreign Member, The Royal Society, UK (2010).
