Tao Houchao group focuses on the development of chemical tools for the study of membrane proteins, including functionalized ligands and the indispensible lipid mimetics, more specifically, detergents. Ligands, either endorgenous or synthetic molecules, are crucial in the elucidation of the molecular mechanism of the corresponding proteins, and are essential to the pharmaceutical industry. Specifically for G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs), many mechanisms of signal transduction still remain to be investigated. Using designed tool ligands, we aim to understand and manipulate the function of GPCRs. Additionally, by the introduction of conceptually new strategy in the detergent design, as well as the integration of other related materials and technologies, we aim to innovate the biophysics application to membrane proteins.
